Core Sampling

Core Sampling
As part of a strategy to determine likely archaeological deposits on certain sites, core sampling is sometimes required in order to analyse and investigate the archaeological potential of deeply buried strata and to produce a deposit model.

Depending on the depth and any known stratigraphy, a number of different solutions can be employed. These include …

  • Basic sample extraction from a closed bucket auger every 10cm with on-site analysis to build up a basic deposit model.
  • Undisturbed sampling using a percussion auger to produce a sleeved core which we would take back to the lab to more fully analyse.
  • A tracked boring rig can be brought to site for deeper and larger sampling. These cores would also be removed back to the lab for analysis, microflotation and investigation.
